The resort precinct grew from a whaling station that operated between 1952 and 1962, processing humpback and sperm whales along a concrete flensing deck that remains visible beneath the main jetty. When commercial whaling ceased, the Queensland government designated the surrounding waters a marine park, and the station's dormitories were converted into guest accommodation. The shipwrecks — steel-hulled vessels ranging from 30 to 73 metres in length — were sunk between 1963 and 1984 to create a breakwater, but prevailing currents carved channels through the sand, transforming the site into a snorkeling corridor where sergeant majors, parrotfish, and wobbegong sharks shelter in the rusted holds. Moreton Island's sand dunes reach 280 metres at Mount Tempest, the highest coastal dune in the world. The island itself is 95 percent national park, with only the Tangalooma resort zone and two small settlements open to visitors. Fresh water percolates through the sand into eighteen ephemeral lakes, several deep enough for kayaking. The island's Indigenous custodians, the Ngugi people, maintained seasonal camps along the western beaches for at least 4,000 years before European contact, harvesting dugong and turtle from the bay shallows.
